How To Earn Extra Income: Part Two

Our first article on how to earn extra income has remained one of our most popular Money Talks articles to date. With rising inflation and gas prices putting pressure on so many people, we wanted to share inspiration by offering a few more ideas of how you can earn extra income. Whether it’s to help you reach your goals faster, to help yourself get out of debt or anywhere between, there are a ton of great ways you can earn money that’ll suit your lifestyle and don’t require getting an additional job.

Become an microinfluencer

Some may be quick to scoff at this suggestion, but becoming an influencer is an excellent way to earn extra income. You don’t need to gain a following of a million people to make this strategy work. Marketing teams across all industries are increasingly turning to regular people to make their content for them – you likely see these types of ads across social media on a regular basis. Even people with just a few thousand followers (or “microinfluencers”) can earn a considerable amount of money making ads for their sponsors, or at the very least, score a ton of free products from their favourite companies in exchange for their support on social media.

Whatever you’re passionate about, think about how you could share that on social media and create a small following. If you’re genuinely interested in something, your interest and expertise will resonate with people in that community and your content will be likely to gain traction if you work at it. This is what companies take note of and are willing to shell out for!

Have a garage sale

Have you been doing some spring cleaning lately? If you have lots of stuff you intend to get rid of, hold a garage sale. There’s no guarantee this will net you a ton of cash, but it’s worth a shot if your stuff would be headed out to donation otherwise.

To boost your reach, post flyers around your neighbourhood at least a few days before your sale and share about it on social media to your following and in locally-based groups that might have interested buyers. You can also partner up with neighbours to broaden to scale of your event and increase the number of potential buyers you might attract.

Sell your photographs

If you consider yourself a decent photographer, you can earn money by selling the rights to your old photos. There are a ton of major stock photo businesses, like Shutterstock, Getty Images and more that buy photos from the public in exchange for a percentage on each licensing sale made.

This option is particularly great for those who already document their lives on a regular basis and have a large library of photos to pull from. This option is also great as once your photos are uploaded to the site of your choosing, the work is essentially done! You’ll just need to wait for your sales to roll in.

Become a tutor

If you have any experience with teaching or kids, earning extra income as a tutor might be a great fit for you. Plenty of online services, such as VIPKID, match tutors with students in China looking to learn the English language. Most online tutoring services don’t require a major time commitment and allow for tutors to pick their own schedule, allowing for flexibility around full-time responsibilities.

Alternatively, if you’d be better off teaching another subject, like math, science, history, there are a number of businesses that connect kids with tutors for online sessions in whatever they need, such as TutorMe. You’ll need to go through a short screening process, but once you’re in you can take on hours as they work for you and get paid on a weekly basis.

Freelance in your spare time

Instead of having someone in-house for everything, small and medium-sized businesses often contract out work for specific projects as needed in fields like graphic design, web design and more. By taking on projects as they fit into your schedule, you can start earning extra money.  Fiverr is the standard marketplace for creators and skilled individuals looking to link up with businesses who need their help. You can set your price according to your skill level, speed, availability and more.

Not sure if you have the qualifications necessary to make it work? Take an online course in the discipline of your choosing and go from there. Google offers a number of free courses in fields like digital marketing and SEO management. You could also invest a small amount in a paid course if you feel it’s necessary, then get going!
